Since 1986, Chahn Sutarapong has been exhibiting his amazing collection in the Rotunda Gallery of the Neilson Hays Library. This July, we are pleased to welcome him back with his latest impressionist paintings. Chahn Sutarapong graduated from Chung Ling high school in Penang Malaysia, while studying art under two Malaysian artists; one of whom is Chua Thien Teng, a well-known batik painter and one of Malaysia’s foremost contemporary art gurus. To round out his career, Chahn took correspondence courses offered by the Washington School of Art and the British Institute of Careers. Chahn began his career as an artist by working with advertising agencies as visualizer/illustrator. He accepted a position in the creative department at the Bangkok Post in 1974. After twenty years of service, he left the Post in 1995 to pursue his passion– painting full-time. Chahn taught art to Japanese Painting Classes at the Japanese Association for quite some years helping others with technique and style. Occasionally Chahn works on portrait and nude, but most of the time is reserved for his laborious landscape painting. He paints quickly, on spot, which gives his landscapes a freshness and vibrancy catching the mood of the moment. He paints anything that impresses him but it is light and shade that you see when you gaze at his timeless scenes of moored barges and Chao Phraya River life. Chahn’s impressionist paintings can be seen in the finest hotels and in the offices of prestigious companies. In fact, over 10 of Chahn’s paintings have been bought by the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and decorate the hotel’s Royal Suite. Another 20 or so of his paintings have been acquired by Samaggi Insurance to hang in the interior of its offices. Chahn’s evocation of Thailand’s warm play of light can also be seen in homes in Japan, Paris, Malaysia, Switzerland, the US and South Africa.
