17 December 2002 Appealing to the government's sense of decency: An old man wraps holy thread around his fingers during prayers to bring peace and soften the government's heart. Ten days after the Assembly of the Poor encampment beside Government House was raided and forcefully dismantled by some 40 macho men in the middle of the night on the King's birthday, the Assembly's Mae Moon Mun Yuen (Long Live Moon River and Communal Unity) Protest Village at Pak Moon Dam was raided and burned by a similar group of 40 militant men. The government further rubs salt into their wounds by observing to the press that the Assembly of the Poor staged the destruction themselves to precipitate a crisis. |
