Pichai started out as an expressionist and surrealist. Later on he turned to be a powerful painter of Buddhist themes presented in delicated details and conveying a clear message of serenity through truth. The primary themes in his work are the continuity of the life cycle, birth and death, as well as the content referring to self development along the path to Nirvana, and the conflicts and impermancence of nature. Symbols to depict Buddha's presence are used in the form of footprints, lotus flowers, trees of life and the wheel of doctrine. Pichai is one of the potent forces in Thai contemporary art.
