Concept

In the two decades that I have worked as an artist, the many good friends I’ve made and the teachers, students and other good people I’ve met have blessed me with the seeds of kindness. It is because of them that I have had the strength and determination to build a life, a family and a home with my own two hands.

The craving for material success has never driven me to work so hard that my health and happiness have ever been at risk. Instead, art has sustained me. It has brought me a peace and contentment that I have been able to share with my two children and the people closest to me. Everyone with an interest in learning from art can find a freedom to express themselves that is appropriate to their age and that opens up their hearts to new possibilities. Just seeing young children giving voice to their dreams and imagination fills me with confidence that the next generation will continue to love, value and have faith in the power of art, as I have done.

Each morning before the darkness lifts, the birds begin to twitter in the branches of the trees. It is time to rise from my bed and set to work again. I am filled with a vitality that is matched by the world outside my window. In the early dawn the color of the sky blends with the fields that surround the house. This and the quiet of the garden stir in me boundless imaginings. Some days happy swarms of bees descend on the white blossoms that cover the crown flower bushes. Their fragrance fills the air as I walk by. The sun shines golden now on the stands of bamboo, but the birds continue to chirp happily. Although the demands of the world outside sometimes intrude upon this peaceful place, I am unperturbed. I retain an inner calm.

This feeling gradually builds to a joy that seems, to me, to be a kind of bonus. It is my reward for each work of art I complete. Any awards I’ve won are merely frosting on the cake - a source of pride that motivates and encourages me to go on creating. I like to think of them as my children - little points of light that twinkle brightly in the vast night sky.

When you find contentment in life, when life ceases to be a struggle for what you don’t have, you discover a way of working and living that brings you inner peace. You learn, too, to reflect on your life and yourself. Your decisions are carefully considered and well thought-out. They aren’t desperate acts or pleas for luck. You’re happy to give free rein to your imagination. You take pleasure in dreams of peace and composure. Even in the midst of flux and uncertainty, you remain centered and focused if you are aware of the light that shines inside you. You can find joy in art. You can treasure love without fear of failure or an excessive hunger for success. Although you may be tested at times, you should keep your composure, determined to carry on, remembering the words of your teachers and those who have offered guidance along the way. You should bow to them in the highest respect for the wisdom they have shared with you. Close your eyes halfway and reflect on the fact that artists are taught not to give in to discouragement or disappointment. Instead, when they are tired, they take a moment and compose themselves. They lay down their burdens and slough off their exhaustion. Then they pick up their burdens once again and turn their faces to the future, knowing that their true destination lies ahead.
