OrdinaryExtraordinary (2006)

“These are people from around my studio,” photographer Manit Sriwanichpoom says of the faces in ‘Ordinary/Extraordinary’. “I’d see them pass by every day, but I didn’t know any of them. My life is consumed by the world outside the soi.” The pretty face across a room; the hugely fat man (who will take up two seats) on a train; the freakish cripple on the sidewalk. We see them even as we try hard not to stare. But the ordinary people in our life, those who inhabit our routine day—our neighbours and the motorcycle taxi gang at the top of our soi, for instance, pass our radar screen unregistered, taken for granted along with the lampposts and other roadside furniture. Until something out of the ordinary happens, we don’t really see them.
